| Field | DISABILITY: Adaptation of a successful technology for wider use | Location | India |
| Description |
The objective of the project is to design a mass-production system to prefabricate low cost thermoplastic knee-ankle-foot orthoses (below knee and above knee, left and right) for rapid production, easier assembly and fitting in large quantities, based on research already carried out. This new technology is superior to the mainstream metal calipers in terms of cost, adaptability and acceptance level, and can be finished and fitted in rural areas where people in need currently do not have access to calipers. As part of the project, the product will be tested via a number of training institutions and field tested by rehabilitation NGOs, and approximately 8,000 people will be fitted with orthoses. A detailed study of the process will be made and the findings will be presented to the government and all organisations involved for the system to be further developed if necessary and for adoption nationwide to reach large numbers of people with disabilities who need to wear orthoses. Mobility
India (MI) will manage the project in collaboration with Jaipur Limb. MI
has been working with the Indian government on various projects involving
the setting up of rehabilitation and research centers. |
