| Description |
Motivation is currently developing
an innovative Wheelchair Technologist’s Certificate course in Tanzania
in association with the Tanzania Training Centre for Orthopaedic
Technologists (TATCOT). Open to all in Africa, the course is planning to
teach up to eight people a year the skills needed to produce adapted
(and locally designed and tested) wheelchairs in Africa. The training
provided not only aims to develop technical skills and new, adapted
wheelchair designs, but also addresses management and systemic issues
such as workshop management, the development of sustainable distribution
systems, health education and mobility skills training. KaR funding
relates to only one part of the whole project, and will lead to the
production of the following outputs: a full course curriculum, training
material for the first training course, trained local trainers, research
on sustainable wheelchair provision, distribution systems and financing
in Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe, and publication of the results of
research on the quality of life of wheelchair users in those same
countries.
Motivation has 8 years of
experience in developing sustainable projects for wheelchair users and
TATCOT is a solid partner, regarded as a centre of excellence in Africa,
with over 15 years experience in running technical training programmes.
