| Description |
This
project seeks to undertake research into the development, deployment and
evaluation of an innovative system for collecting and managing health information
at Lilongwe Hospital, Malawi. The proposed data collection system consists
of a number of clinical workstations (computers) connected to a central server.
The use of these workstations will be integrated into the existing
workflow of the paediatric department to minimize the impact of the intervention.
Data will subsequently be collected and will be available in both raw and
aggregate form to “inform” healthcare delivery, facilities management,
and public health initiatives at the national level. The project is intended
to undertake research to make wider use of two successful technologies
and their effective application: the touch screen interface and wireless
networking, and examine the benefits and challenges that these technologies
bring in a developing country environment.
The
project team comprises two senior members of Lilongwe Central Hospital’s
staff supported by a British consultant. They bring together the required
range of clinical, technological and management expertise with particular
strengths in health informatics, paediatrics and hospital administration. The
project will focus on the hospital’s Paediatrics Department, and includes
provision for knowledge transfer to a local hospital technician for long-term
sustainability.
